#KnowJustice: Legacies – Gallery Talk
May 24 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm
FreeJoin the conversation with a panel of community organizers, artists, historians, and educators who contributed to (Re)Present: Racism & Resistance in Iowa, a new illustrated history book for young adults. The book breaks down dangerous common myths about Iowa—that Iowa is all white people, that Iowans are nice so they can’t be racist, and that following the rules will protect people from racism—and replaces them with the historically-grounded realities that Iowa has always been all white people and is getting more diverse, that Iowa Nice is not reliable or a good way to advance racial justice, and that mutual aid, self-determination, and solidarity is what protects people from racism. (Re)Present is the latest book from Past Present Future Publishing, a Des Moines-based publishing company founded by Jen Leatherby and Katy Swalwell focused on uplifting stories from the margins in Iowa with all profits going to youth justice work.
This event is a collaboration between Past Present Future Publishing and ArtForce Iowa.
